TEMPE GENERAL PLAN 2040 PUBLIC HEARINGS SET FOR OCT.-NOV. CITIZEN INPUT

Tempe’s General Plan 2040 draft has spent a year between city leaders writing it and a period of online public review that culminated Sept. 16. October now begins the General Plan 2040 Community Working Group’s two-month stretch of public hearings meant to direct updates to the community-betterment strategy and address citizen concerns.

The 23-member steering committee of City Council-appointed Tempe community stakeholders has taken the Tempe Forum feedback under advisement, as well as that of multiple online public meetings. The group now feels prepared to address in detail the best course they see for Tempe’s next 30 years of development. Your Tempe collision repair center agrees.

As ordered by Arizona statute, the Tempe General Plan lays out several specific chapters, each addressing a different perceived planning issue. The idea is for each Arizona city to adopt a long-range, comprehensive strategy for physical community development. Each city must either adopt a new plan or re-adopt the presently adhered-to one no later than the current plan’s tenth anniversary of its adoption. If adopting a new General Plan, the document goes back to a public ballot for ratification by a majority affirmative vote.

Tempe’s chance to vote on General Plan 2040 comes with a May 2014 election. Meetings will be held as follows:

  • DEVELOPMENT REVIEW COMMISSION, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m., Tempe Union High School District Board Room, 500 W. Guadalupe Rd.
  • DEVELOPMENT REVIEW COMMISSION’S VOTE ON RECOMMENDATION, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m., Tempe City Council Chambers, 31 E. Fifth St.
  • TEMPE CITY COUNCIL MEETING, Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m., Tempe City Council Chambers
  • TEMPE CITY COUNCIL MEETING WITH VOTE ON RESOLUTION, Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m., Tempe City Council Chambers
